Veteran's Administration - Benefit Information

The family of a deceased veteran of U. S. Military Service is entitled to receive certain benefits under Federal Veterans’ Administration Laws.

To apply for VETERANS’ ADMINISTRATION BENEFITS and PAYMENTS, these forms are needed to apply for the Veterans’ Administration Burial Benefit and/or the Funeral Benefit. The Ocean Grove Memorial Home will provide these forms and complete them for you once the original discharge has been provided to us. We will make photocopies of if for your use.

After you receive the receipted funeral bill, send (or better, take) all these forms to:

N. J. Veterans’ Officer
601 Bangs Avenue Phone ahead
Asbury Park, N. J. 07712
732 • 775-7009

To apply for a Free Veteran’s Grave Marker use VA Form 40-1330. We will provide you with a completed form if appropriate:

You may apply for a bronze or a granite marker. We recommend against a marble marker as marble has a tendency to break down over time. Bronze is required by “memorial parks” and granite is indicated for a standard “cemetery.”

Follow the instructions on the back of the form. Complete, sign and have your cemetery superintendent sign the form allowing the marker and accepting consigneeship (if he agrees).

Send the completed application to the address noted on the instruction sheet.

The cemetery will probably make a charge to make a concrete foundation for the marker and to place the marker on the grave.

You may have to pay that charge before they give the above signatures and you will have to pay the charges before the marker will be set.

If you have questions, please contact the Ocean Grove Memorial Home for assistance.

No. Space is limited to only those who meet the criteria of Arlington National Cemetery.
Are all U.S. veterans who reside in New Jersey eligible for burial in state veterans’ cemetery?
In order for a veteran to be buried in New Jersey’s Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, he must meet the following eligibility requirements:

When the time comes, how can I arrange to be buried in the N.J. veterans’ cemetery?
A request for burial in the cemetery may be made at the time of death through a funeral director. Space may not be reserved prior to need. The person making the funeral arrangements must submit proof of the veteran’s honorable service and legal residence in New Jersey. Proof of service would be the veteran’s discharge papers, or DD214. Proof of residency can be established by the deceased’s driver’s license, continuous phone bills, history of property tax payment or any type record that indicates the deceased lived in the state. You can visit the New Jersey State website for further information.

Can non-veterans be buried in the state veteran’s cemetery?
The only non-veterans who may be buried in the New Jersey Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery are the veteran’s spouse, unmarried children under 21 and unmarried adult children over 21 who became incapable of self-support before age 21 because of mental or physical impairment (limited to 2 children per veteran).

How much does it cost to be buried in the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery?
Eligible veterans receive a plot for the veteran and eligible dependents, a grave liner for each burial, interment services, use of the chapel, a U.S. bronze grave marker and granite base and grave maintenance in perpetuity at no charge.
