CREMATION URNSA cremation "urn" is any container in which cremated remains are placed temporarily or are permanently stored. An "urn" does not have a specific shape nor is it made of any specific material. It is a container that holds cremated remains.
Usually the purpose that an urn is used for drives the material from which it is made and, sometimes, its shape. Specific urns are made for the following purposes:
Decorative Urns - When we think of a "cremation urn on the mantle piece" we often picture a decorative urn made for this purpose...the storage of cremated remains that will be in view. This type of urn is often purchased when the ashes are to be kept in the home or placed in a columbarium as a FINAL resting place. Decorative urns may be made of any type of material but most commonly, they are of Bronze or a specific species of wood (like mahogany or walnut). They may be full size (to hold all the cremated remains of one person), double urns to hold the cremated remains of two people, or they may be "keepsake" size the designed purpose being to hold only a portion of the cremated remains.
Burial Urns - The designed purpose of a burial urn is to contain the cremated remains of a person when burial in the earth is the method of final disposition. Burial urns are usually made of a material that will not corrode or break down in another manner when in contact with the earth. Plastic or concrete is the material most burial urns are made with.
Scattering Urns - When the method of final disposition is scattering and the scattering is to be done as part of a ceremony, a special vessel is often used, from which the cremated remains are disbursed. A scattering urn is often long and tube-like to aid in the scattering action and is usually disposed of after the scattering has been accomplished.
Sea Urns - When placement of the cremated remains is to be accomplished in the ocean (or in any other body of water), a Sea Urn is often purchased...the purpose of this type of urn is to disolve after it carries the cremated remains to the bottom. The material of which most common types of sea urns are made is of unfired but dried clay.
Keepsake Urns - Keepsake Urns are always also "decorative" and by definition hold only a portion of the cremated remains...from a miniscule amount as in a piece of jewelry (locket on a necklace) or a larger amount as in a miniature hollow bronze, marble or wood urn. Of course, the disposition of the remainder of the cremated remains
Urn Vaults - When cremated remains, in any kind of container other than a Burial Urn are to be buried, the consideration of an Urn Vault is indicated. An Urn Vault is either a plastic or concrete box (just like a concrete burial vault for caskets) that the container of cremated remains is placed in, and then buried. The Urn Vault protects the container from the elements of the earth.
Temporary Urns - The container (usually plastic) in which the cremated remains are returned from the crematory is intended as a temporary urn but let it be understood that this temporary container is often buried or stored. There is no legal requirement that cremated remains ever be placed in any specific type of container, even for burial.
Literally thousands of different kinds and shapes of urns are made today. It is our intention to post here pictures of some of the urns that we display for sale. Until those digital photos are available, the following textual descriptions will have to suffice. Once those photos are available, click the blue underlined links (below) to see those urns.
