Some OTHER ConcernsIt is not our intention to give legal advise. You may want to discuss details about the following ideas with your attorney.
Review your financial affairs:
Close all jointly held accounts and open new accounts in your name with correct tax identification number (usually your SS Number).
You may want to include another on the new account as a joint owner.
Cancel direct deposit retirement benefit payments that have been coming for the decedent...change yours to your new account.
Reestablish title of your Safe Deposit Box.
Reestablish all outstanding mortgages, personal notes, etc.
Apply for all credit life insurance payments, if any exist.
Notify insurance companies of the death...and file claims when applicable:
Life Insurance.
Medical, Health, Disability, Travel or Accidental death.
Pension Benefits.
Review your Home Owners coverage.
Apply for benefits when applicable.
Social Security Benefits.
Veterans Burial and Survivor Benefits.
Pension Benefits.
Workmens Compensation Benefits.
Notify all credit card companies of the death.
Apply for all credit card life insurance coverage, if applicable.
Cancel all individually held cards of the decedent.
Change all jointly held accounts.
Make a new will, if necessary.
Notify your accountant or tax preparer. Provide him with:
A certified copy of the death certificate.
Previously filed tax returns and current income and dividend statements.
Notify your stockbroker:
Change the ownership of jointly or solely owned stocks...sell or transfer.
Review any open orders placed by the decedent.
Notify the N. J. Division of Motor Vehicles to transfer the title of all registered that were registered in the decedents name.
