DEATHS IN 2004

HELEN BENNETT, 99, of GALLOWAY, died Saturday, January 3, 2004, at the Atlantic City Medical Center, Pomona. She was born in Freehold. Surviving is a nephew, Joseph E. Bennett of Neptune. A private graveside ceremony will be held at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold, with burial following. There were no calling hours.

WALTER SEEBACH PROPERT, Jr., 83, of Allenhurst, died Tuesday, January 13, 2004 at home. Mr. Propert was a member of the Ocean Grove Auditorium Ushers Association for more than 60 years and had been an Ocean Grove Tenting resident for more than 50 years. Born in Philadelphia, he moved to Allenhurst to retire 20 years ago. He served as a naval officer in the Pacific during World War II. He attended Drexel University and was a professional engineer. He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy in 2003. Surviving are two sons, Stephen T. and his wife Diane E. of Spring Lake, Walter Jeffrey and his wife Se-Sone of Bradley Beach, a sister, Betty Lynn Kinley and her husband David of Philadelphia, four grandchildren Jeffrey, Jayne, Danielle and Eileen, a niece, Dale Kinley and a nephew David Kinley, both of Philadelphia. A funeral ceremony was held at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove on Sat. morn., Jan. 17th at 11:00 with burial following at the Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls, N. J. Friends were invited to call at the funeral home on Saturday from 10-11.

JAMES M. MacDONALD, 40, of BRADLEY BEACH, died Saturday, January 17, 2004, at home. He had worked as a concert technician. Mr. MacDonald was a 1981 graduate of Holmdel High School, and a member of Local Union number 534 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts, New Brunswick. Born in Red Bank, he had lived in Holmdel before moving here eleven years ago. Surviving are a brother, John K. MacDonald of East Brunswick, two sisters, Janice K. MacDonald of Oviedo, Florida and Jean K. MacDonald-Nordahl of Windermere, Florida, his parents, Frederick D. and Carol Ann Pederson MacDonald of Oviedo, FL, and a niece, Megan MacDonald of Sayreville. A memorial ceremony was held on Wed. eve., Jan. 21st from 7-9 at The Stone Pony, 913 Ocean Avenue, Asbury Park.

ZELDA Z. MERLIN of OCEAN TOWNSHIP, died Thursday, January 22, 2004, at the St. Barnabas Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Long Branch. Mrs. Merlin had worked as a school teacher for the Bradley Beach Board of Education for twenty-five years until retiring in 1996. She was a 1970 graduate of Monmouth College and a volunteer in the Emergency Department of Monmouth Medical Center for 14 years. She was born in Bronx, NY and was predeceased by her husband, Murray B. Merlin in 1988. Surviving are two sons, Steven Z., at home and Ross Z., of Potomac, Maryland, and a brother Howard B. Zaimant of California. No funeral ceremony has been scheduled at this time and there were no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, a contribution for breast cancer research to the American Cancer Society, 801 Broad Street, Shrewsbury, N. J. 07702 or to the Monmouth Council of the Boy Scouts of America, P.O. BARBARA ROSS ANDERSON, 63, of HAMMONTON, died Saturday, January 24, 2004, at the William B. Kessler Memorial Hospital, Hammonton. She had worked as a school teacher for the Asbury Park Board of Education for more than fifteen years until retiring in 1977 and had been a member of the Asbury Park Women's Club. She was a graduate of Monmouth University, West Long Branch. Born in Neptune, NJ, she had lived in Loch Arbor and Interlaken before coming here 16 years ago. Surviving are a sister, Peggy Paterra of Delray Beach, Florida, four cousins Robert D. Edelson, Eleanor Edelson Millar, Paul Edelson, Bruce Johnson, her aunt, Esther Grieco and her longtime companion, Spencer Selnow. Funeral services were private. There were no calling hours. ELINOR C. MAGEE, 86, of SPRING LAKE HEIGHTS, died January 24, 2004, at home. She began her career on Wall Street in 1940. While living in San Francisco, she worked from 1948 to 1962 as a secretary for the newspaper union, regarding labor relations. Mrs. Magee had been a member of the Oakhurst United Methodist Church and a member of the Jersey Shore Woman’s Club. Born in Newark,, she had lived in Ocean Grove, then San Francisco before returning to New Jersey in 1962. She was predeceased by her husband, George R. Magee in 1973. Surviving are a nephew Cary Clayton of Neptune, three nieces Elinor Ashfield of Lincoln, DE, Judy Dusche of Cedar Grove, NJ and Jean Quinn of Milford, DE, her sister Charlotte Clayton of Lincoln, DE and her grand nieces and nephews Lisa, Ian and Alex Skuby, Peter Dusche, David and Cary Clayton, Jr., Wendy and Robin Schuler and Christine Seidel. A funeral ceremony was held at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove on Thurs. morn., Jan. 29th at 11:00 with burial following at Atlantic View Cemetery, Manasquan. Friends were invited to call at the funeral home on Thursday from 9-11.

LAVINIA C. VanHOUTEN, 98, of INTERLAKEN, died February 15, 2004, at her residence. She was formerly the chief beautician at Schoonmakers Department Store, Newburgh, NY. Mrs. VanHouten was a former member of the Fitkin Auxiliary to Jersey Shore Medical Center. She had attended Trinity Episcopal Church, Asbury Park and was a former member of the Allenhurst Beach Club. Born in Sheffield, England, she had lived in Newburgh, N. Y. before moving here 54 years ago. She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Wendell VanHouten in 1981. Surviving are a cousin, Anne Yatteau in Correytown, Tenn. and several cousins in Sheffield, England. A funeral ceremony was held at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Ave., on Wednesday at 3:30. EDWIN Z. GABRIEL, 90 of OCEAN GROVE, died February 16, 2004 at his residence. He was a self employed electrical and mechanical engineer. Mr. Gabriel had attended the First Baptist Church in Asbury Park and sang in its choir and he also attended St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Ocean Grove and had formerly sung in its choir and with the O. G. Auditorium Choir. He was a graduate of the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Science Degree in Electronic Engineering. He currently held 40 U. S. Patents. He was a member of the Helicopter Society and the Institute of Electronic & Electrical Engineers. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of WW II. Born in Union City, N. J., he had lived in Montclair much of his life before moving here forty years ago.
Surviving are three cousins, Dorothy Holbein of Ocean Grove, Gerry DeYoung of Crozet, Virginia and Gloria Jacobs of Acton, Mass. A funeral ceremony was held at the First Baptist Church, Third & Grand Avenues, Asbury Park on Sat. morn., Feb. 21st at 10:00 with burial following at the Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls, N. J. Friends were invited to call at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9.

FRANCIS J. O'KEEFE, 55, of OCEAN GROVE, died February 18, 2004, at his residence. He had worked as a letter carrier for U.S. Postal Service, Jersey City, N. J. He was an Army veteran of the Viet Nam War. Born in Jersey City, N. J., he had lived there before moving here three years ago.
Surviving are an aunt, Ann Tantullo of Jersey City, an uncle, Thomas Tantullo and his wife, Mary and a son, Frank O'Keefe. A graveside ceremony was held at the Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, N. J. on Fri. aft., Feb. 20th at 1:30 with burial following. There were no calling hours. JOHN PEGUES KELLEY, Jr., 86, of OCEAN GROVE, died February 20, 2004, at the Manor-by-the-Sea, Ocean Grove. He was a self employed musician until retiring. He was born in Marshall and was a US Navy veteran of WW II. Surviving are a sister, Nancy Olifphint of Houston, Texas, his friend, Lionel Wiggam of Ocean Grove. No local funeral ceremony has been scheduled at this time. There were no calling hours.

MARY A. DECKER, of OCEAN GROVE, died February 23, 2004, at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. She had worked as a data processor at the University of Rochester for more than fifteen years until retiring in 1973. Mrs. Decker was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Neptune. Born in White Haven, Pa., she had lived in Rochester, N. Y. before moving here three years ago. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas O. Decker in 1962. Surviving are a son, William Decker and his wife, June of Ocean Grove, two granddaughters, Tamsin Shea and Marilynn Cretin, a grandson, David Decker, a nephew, Alan Austin and his wife Judy and several nieces.
A Private Memorial Ceremony will be held at the Redeemer Lutheran Chruch, Neptune, N. J. at a later date. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the Now and Forever Fund, 54 Pitman Avenue, Ocean Grove, N. J. 07756 would be appreciated.

MARGARET A. TODD, 86, of WANAMASSA - Ocean Township, died Saturday, March 6, 2004 at her residence after a brief illness. In her early career she had worked as a billing clerk for the Jersey Central Power & Light Co., Asbury Park until retiring.
Mrs. Todd was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church, Asbury Park where she had met her husband of 61 years. She was a devoted mother and homemaker and loved gardening, bird watching and spent many hours at the ocean. Over the years she spent many weeks camping throughout the country and enjoyed the nation's National Parks.
A lifelong resident of the Jersey shore, she was born and raised in Bradley Beach and had lived there before moving here 45 years ago.
Surviving are her husband, Charles Todd, twin sons, Charles Bruce Todd of Wanamassa and David Andrew Todd of Wall, two daughters, Margaret (Peggy) Bowen of Oakhurst and Cecilia Collins of Bricktown, two sisters, Isabel Curtis of Calif. and Helen Walworth of Florida, six grandchildren, Nancy Morris of Oakhurst, Donald Collins of Beachwood, Timothy Collins of Virginia, Rebecca and Elizabeth Todd of Wall and Christopher Todd of Wanamassa.

WINIFRED M. WANAMAKER, 74, of Ocean Grove, grandmother of Kyle, Jesse and Seth, died on March 11, 2004, at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. Along with her much beloved grandchildren, she is survived by her husband of 50 years, Albert Wanamaker, her son, Mickey Wanamaker and his wife, Diane Umansky, of New York City, and a brother, Albert Reynolds, of California. Born in New York City, Mrs. Wanamaker and her husband lived in Rockland County, NY and Florida, and have had a home in Ocean Grove since 1970. JANISE L. BACKLUND, 51, of NEW YORK, N. Y., died March 10, 2004 in New York, due to multiple injuries in a street accident. She had been a vice president for the Republic Bank of NY, New York City. Mrs. Backlund was a graduate of the Colts Neck and Freehold Regional Schools and had received a degree from Boston University in Fine Arts.

PETER J. LARDIERE, 86, of EAST ORANGE, died Monday, March 22, 2004, at the MediCenter, Neptune City. He was a real estate broker and owned and operated a real estate agency in Orange, N. J. for many years until retiring in 1985. Mr. Lardiere was a U. S. Air Force veteran of WW II.
Born in Newark, N. J., he had lived there before moving to East Orange 40 years ago. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Rose Belasco in 1994.

She was a clerical worker for the American General Insurance Company, New York, N. Y. for more than twenty years until retiring. After leaving American General, she was employed by the Melvin Ramer Insurance Company of Passaic, N. J.

ROBERT H. CATLEY, 71, of OCEAN GROVE, died Thursday, April 1, 2004, at the Jer. Shore Univ. Med. Ctr., Neptune. He had worked as a fireman for the Ocean Grove Board of Fire Commissioners for more than thirty five years until retiring in 1995.
Mr. Catley was a former chief and member of the Washington Fire Company of the Ocean Grove Fire Departments. He was a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the N. J. CLAIRE L. "Judy" NEWMAN, 80, of OCEAN GROVE, died May 3, 2004, at the Jer. Shore Univ. Med. Ctr., Neptune. She had worked as a secretary at Fort Monmouth's Camp Evans , Wall, N. J. until retiring. More recently she had worked in the office of Dr. S. Ravine, Wall until 1984. In the 1940s and '50s she was a professional vocalist in north Jersey and the Shore area with various bands including Frank Dailey at the Meadow Brook, Cedar Grove and the Ivanhoe in Newark. She was also a guest soloist on WJLK and at various churches and religious functions.
Mrs. Newman was formerly a member of the Community Baptist Church, Shark River Hills where she had served as a deaconess, secretary, Sunday school teacher, a co-leader of the youth group and as a vice president of the Ladies Guild. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Ocean Grove since 1993 where she had served on the Education Committee and Prayer Chain. She was a member of St. Paul's auxiliary and a volunteer at the Francis Asbury Manor, Ocean Grove where she resided since 2002. Mrs. Newman was a former president of the Central Jersey Christian Business and Professional Women of America. She had been president of the Forever Young Club of Neptune, a former member of the Neptune Senior Club and was a member and volunteer at the Neptune Senior Center. She was a member of the National Assoc. of Retired Federal Employees, the Shark River Hills Yacht Club and the SRH Fire Company #4 Aux.
Born in Montclair, N. J., she had lived in Newark, East Orange and Shark River Hills before moving to Ocean Grove two years ago.
She was predeceased by her husband, Vincent E. Newman in 1984. Surviving are a daughter, Lori O'Neil and her husband, Neptune Police Chief Howard, a grandson, Michael H. O'Neil and a granddaughter, Allie L. O'Neil, both at home and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Acker was the office manager in the Bloomfield Junior High School for many years and was a member of the Pitman Presbyterian Church. She leaves a son, Donald R. ELLIE E. RUSH-FORNAROTTO, 57, of Ocean Grove, died Thursday, June 24, 2004 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, of a sudden illness. She was the daughter of the late Dr. H. Floyd Rush and Isabelle Rush, both of Ocean Grove and was predeceased by a brother, Bryan F. Rush, also of Ocean Grove. She was a graduate of Neptune High School, and the Stuart School of Business, East Orange. A lifelong resident of the shore area, she was employed by the State of New Jersey for over 16 years, and before that she was a homemaker. During her younger years, she was a member of “Ten New Teens”, and later she was a founding member of the “Sand-Pebbles.” She loved the beach. Mother, daughter, sister, wife, and friend, she was many things to many people. She leaves behind a loving sister and brother in law, Marie I. and Jeff Walton of Howell, three children and their spouses, Joseph N. and Dana A. Fornarotto of Long Branch, Anthony M. and Marie Fornarotto of Pennsylvania, Jennifer L. Fornarotto and Hector Lugue of Long Branch, three grandchildren, Angelarose Marie and Nicholas William Fornarotto, of Long Branch, and Fury Thomas Lugue of Long Branch, many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews as well as countless loving and devoted friends, also a brother Robbin F. Rush of Florida.

WILLIAM T. FRANKLIN, Sr., 79, of NEPTUNE CITY, died Monday, July 26, 2004, of congestive heart failure. He was the owner of Franklin's Sunoco on Main Street in Asbury Park for over 30 years. CARL B. GARDNER, 94, of MURRIETA, CA, died Monday, September 13, 2004, at home. He had worked as a radio engineer and program manager for the US Army Electronics Command, Fort Monmouth for more than 29 years until retiring in 1970. Mr. Gardner was a member of the Crescent Temple, AAONMS, Trenton, the Ocean Grove Masonic Lodge, #228, now the Wall - Spring Lake Lodge # 73, Free and Accepted Masons, the Scottish Rite, Valley of Trenton, and was ham radio operator, W2OMZ, since 1939. He was a consultant for ten years to the United States Representatives to NATO working with radio frequency control devices, and served as an intern on the Electro Technical Committee. He abolished the use of the word frequency, in favor of hertz. He attended several engineering classes, and was recognized as an engineer by the US Government, because of his abilities. He was a veteran of WW II. Born in Portland, PA, he had lived in Ocean Grove, Interlaken, Lakewood, and Bull Head City, AZ before moving to California. He was predeceased in 1996 by his wife of 63 years, Jane Harrington Gardner. Surviving are a son Ralph of Murrieta, CA, a brother, Donald Y. Gardner of Wellesley, Mass., two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

ANNE S. ORR BUCHANAN, 85, of ASBURY PARK, died Friday, September 24, 2004, at home. She was an innkeeper, and had owned Buchanan's Guest House in Ocean Grove, N. J. Mrs. Buchanan attended the Salvation Army and was a member of the Asbury Park Senior Citizens. She was born in County Down, Northern Ireland. Mrs. Orr was predeceased by her husband, Thomas R. Buchanan in December 2003. Surviving in Europe are two sisters, Martha Orr Ballance and Carrie Orr both of Kilkeel, County Down, Northern Ireland, a sister-in-law, Dorothy Orr of Ireland, and numerous nieces and nephews in Ireland and England. WILLIAM T. "Bill" KRESGE, former editor and publisher of the Ocean Grove Times from 1945 until 1985, died on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 at the Francis Asbury Manor in Ocean Grove where he had been a resident since moving in April from the Ocean Grove home he built and lived in since 1947. Born in Cranford N.J. on June 3, 1920, he was the son of Homer D. and Mary Stevenson Kresge, who moved to Ocean Grove in 1925 with their five children, when the senior Mr. Kresge purchased the Ocean Grove Times.
Bill Kresge graduated from Neptune High School in 1937 and from Bucknell University in 1941. After graduation he joined the U.S. Naval Air Corps, was commissioned an ensign at Pensicola Naval Air Station and served as a carrier—based fighter pilot, last serving with a night attack squadron in the Pacific when the war ended.
On September 9, 1942 he and Alice Helena Haines were married in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church where he had been a member since 1925. Mrs. Kresge predeceased him in 2002 after sixty years of marriage.
Following the war, he served for more than 20 years as a legislative aide for Monmouth County State Senator Richard R. Stout, serving as secretary of various Senate Committees. During the 1940s and 1950s he was a member of the Neptune Township Municipal Committee. He subsequently became chairman and a 35 year member of the Neptune Housing Authority. In addition, he served as treasurer of the Monmouth County Republican Executive Committee and as a member of the Board of Governors of the Jersey Shore Medical Center.
He was a member of the Asbury Park Rotary Club since 1947 and was a recipient of its Paul Harris Fellow Award. He was a former member of the Asbury Park Salvation Army Advisory Board, former Chairman of the Ocean Grove Advisory Board for Mutual Aid Savings (now Provident Savings Bank), past President and 50 year member of the E.H. Stokes Volunteer Fire Company and 50 year member of the Ocean Grove Masonic Lodge (now Spring Lake-Wall), charter member and former Chairman of the Ocean Grove Recreation Commission, charter member and Board Member of the Ocean Grove Historical Society, member of Ocean Grove Fishing Club and former member of Manasquan River Golf Club.
In July of this year he became a member of the Neptune High School Hall of Fame. He had been Chairman of Neptune Township’s Tercentenary Committee and of its US Bicentennial Committee and a member of the township’s Centennial Committee. He was also past President and a charter member of the Neptune Red and Black Association and a member of the Neptune Historical Society.
Mr. Kresge is survived by a son, Ted, who is married to the former Margaret Field of Charleston, W. Va., and resides in Atlanta, Georgia with two children, Ted and Margaret. Mr. Kresge is also survived by three sisters, Marjorie Oliver Burman of Manasquan, Mary Jane Jones of Yardley, Pa. and Louise Isaacs of Naples, Florida.
Friends were invited to call at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove on Friday evening from 7 until 9 pm. Services were held at 1:00 pm on Sunday, October 3rd at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, New York and Embury Avenues, in Ocean Grove. WILLIAM A. "Hank" GUYER, 79, of OCEAN GROVE, died Monday, October 4, 2004, at the MediCenter, Neptune City. He had worked as an inspector for the State of New Jersey at Freehold Raceway for more than eighteen years until retiring. Mr. Guyer was a member of the Washington Fire Company, Ocean Grove and a member of the Ocean Grove Fishing Club. He enjoyed dozens of motor trips to the West Coast. Mr. Guyer was a veteran of WW II, receiving the purple heart for injuries he received in battle while serving in Germany. Born in Ocean Grove, he was a lifelong resident here. Surviving are a brother, Edward G. Guyer of Spring Lake Heights, a nephew, Michael Guyer of Bushkill, PA, and two nieces, Barbara Woodall of Glassboro, NJ and Kathleen McDowell of Kansas. A funeral ceremony was held at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove on Wed. eve., Oct. 6th at 8:30. Private burial was at Monmouth Memorial Park. RICK "Rocket" SMITH Jr., 52, of OCEAN GROVE, died Tuesday, October 12, 2004, at home. He had worked as a truck driver for Porschetta Trucking, Jackson, and previously for Pomponio Trucking and Muccio Trucking. Also, he was the owner of Big Rix Deli, Brick Township. Surviving are a son, Sam Smith of Eatontown, a daughter, Sara L. Smith of Winn, Maine, a sister, Debra A. Vela of Toms River, his mother, Jacqueline Sullivan Vela-Novick of Boynton Beach, FL, his fiance, Patricia L. Osborn of Wall Twp., and his nieces and nephews, Soncera Vera, James Hurley and Courtland Hurley. Rick was a good friend to many and will truly be missed. HELEN OLSEN WAGLOW, 90, of OCEAN GROVE, died October 19, 2004, at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. She was a dancer in the United States and Europe, and had performed at the Paris Opera House. VICTORIA S. MASCITELLI, 93, of OCEAN GROVE, died October 23, 2004, at her residence. Mrs. Mascitelli was associated with the Ascension R. C. Church, Bradley Beach and had been active with the Neptune Senior Center, the Allaire Day Care Center and was a member of Moose in Ortley Beach. Born in Jersey City, N. J., she had lived in Toms River before coming here ten years ago. She was predeceased by her husband, Dominic Mascitelli in 1986. Surviving are two sons, Steven F. Mascitelli of Elberon and John McDevitt of Ocean Grove, two daughters, Diane M. Jones of Toms River and Lois Mascitelli Foster of Ocean Grove, two stepdaughters, Janet DeMauro of Edison and Frances Hammer of Toms River, two sisters, Wanda Skrosky of Newark and Valeria Tate of Bristol, Va., ten grandchildren and 14 greatgrandchildren. EDITH “Dee Dee” ASCHENBACH, 102, of Ocean Grove, formerly of Plainfield, died Saturday October 23, 2004 at the Manor-By-The-Sea, Ocean Grove. Cherished mother of two daughters, Jean Yocum and her husband Bill of Clearwater, Fla., and Teddie Caulfield, and her husband Barry of Fair Haven, beloved grandmother of seven, Dale Hough and her husband, Ronald, of Pittsburgh, PA, Bob Cooper and his wife, Ina, of Alfred, Maine, Patti C. Orluk and her husband, Bill, of Chestertown, NY, Greg Cooper and his wife, Cathy, of Neptune City, Daryl Ley and her husband, Tom, of Rumson, NJ, Rob Hasselman and his wife, Marie, of Pittsburgh, PA, Suzan C. Anderson and her husband, Peter, of Old Saybrook, CT, adored great grandmother of 22 and greatgreatgrandmother of two. Edith was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Ocean Grove and a former member of the First Methodist Church of Plainfield. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Plainfield Women’s Club, the Asbury Park Women’s Club, and the Women’s Auxiliary to the OGAuditorium Ushers. She was a founding member of both the Ocean Grove Historical Society and the Centennial Dames and she oversaw the development of the Centennial Cottage in Ocean Grove. She was a published author of short stories and children’s books, and was an artist of pastel portraits. She was written up in Willard Scott’s book, “The Older the Fiddle, the Sweeter the Tune.” Born Edith Brush on July 30, 1902 in Jamaica, Long Island, NY, she grew up in Patchogue. She lived in Plainfield, summering in Ocean Grove before becoming a year round resident in 1959. She married Carl Aschenbach in 1921, and he predeceased her in 1956.
Friends were invited to call on Monday, October 25th from 4-7 at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove. A private graveside ceremony was held Tuesday morning at Hillside Cemetery, Plainfield and a Memorial Ceremony was held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 in the Chapel at the Francis Asbury Manor, 70 Stockton Avenue, Ocean Grove. SAMUEL F. CREASE, 85, of NEPTUNE, died October 31, 2004, at the Jer. Shore Univ. Med. Ctr., Neptune. He had worked in the garment industry for many years until retiring. Born in Long Branch, N. ANNAMARIE COONROD, 85, of Asbury Park, died Thursday, November 25, 2004, at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. She was an instructor of French at the University of Indiana and Marian College, both in Indianapolis, Indiana, and she worked as a translator for various law firms in Chicago, and was a teacher of French, Italian and Spanish in northern New Jersey. Under the auspices of the Red Cross, she taught English to Italian war brides in La Spezia, Italy and later worked for the U.S. Army in Trieste, Italy after World War II. Born in Montecatini, Italy, in 1919, she was married in Trieste, Italy in 1949, studied in Paris, and came to the United States in 1951. Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Roger A. Coonrod, two daughters, Karin Coonrod Geballe and her husband, Jonathan, of New York City, and Simonetta Coonrod of Montclair, and two grandsons, Konrad and Barret Preuninger. A private funeral ceremony and interment will be held at the Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown, N.J. There are no calling hours. JEAN GILLAN ATKINS, 99, of OCEAN GROVE, died Friday, November 26, 2004, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. She taught grammar/elementary school in Ocean Grove for forty-five years until retiring in 1971. Mrs. Atkins was a longtime member of the Tennant Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the First United Methodist Church of Asbury Park and its Priscilla Women's Circle, the National Education Association, the New Jersey Education Association, the New Jersey Retired Educators Association, and the Monmouth County Retired Educators Association. Mrs. Atkins and her husband were both accomplished artists. Their work is an abiding legacy, gracing the homes of relatives and friends. Born in Garfield, New Jersey, she was a lifelong resident of Ocean Grove, living her last years at Francis Asbury Manor. Jean was the beloved daughter of the late Violet and William Gillan. She was predeceased by her husband, Harold C. "Tommy" Atkins in 1956 and three sisiters, Alberta Mial, Margaret Keer and Eleanor White.
Surviving are two brothers, William Gillan of Shark River Hills, Neptune and Daniel Gillan of Mahwah, a sister and Audrey Gibbs of Ascutney, Vermont, and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral ceremony was held at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove, on Tuesday morn., November 30th at 11:00 with burial following at the Mt. Prospect Cemetery, Neptune. Friends were invited to call at the funeral home on Tuesday morning from 10:00 -11:00.

AMELIA PRATO, 95, of OCEAN GROVE, died December 6, 2004, at the Manor-by-the-Sea, Neptune. She had worked as a clerical assistant for the Reinhold Publishing Co., N. Y. C., N. Y. for more than twenty years until retiring.
Born in Brooklyn, N. Y., she had lived there until moving to the Francis Asbury Manor in Ocean Grove in July of 2001.
She was predeceased by her husband, Rocco Prato in 1967.
Surviving are a son, Joseph J. of Port Jefferson, N. Y., two daughters, Molly Ward of Brooklyn, N. Y. and Patricia Ann Florio of Ocean Grove, a brother, Vincent Prano of Brooklyn, N. Y., two sisters, Jennie Coniglio and Theresa Amorello, both of Brooklyn, N. Y., ten grandchildren and thirteen greatgrandchildren.

DOROTHY M. SMITH, 77, of WEST LONG BRANCH, died December 6, 2004, at her residence. She had worked as a secretary for the General Electric X-Ray Corp., Newark, N. J. retiring. PAUL H. CAMPBELL, 90, of OCEAN GROVE, died Friday, December 17, 2004 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. He was a packaging engineer for Robertson Paperbox Company, Montville, Conn., retiring in 1986. Mr. Campbell was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in World War II, earning the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Born in New York State, he had lived in Somerville, NJ before moving to Ocean Grove in 1985 where he became an active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Harriet Martyn Campbell, two sons, Clifford Campbell of Shrewsbury, Mass., and Paul Campbell, Jr., of Milton, Mass., two daughters, Sallie Ruhnka and Christine Rosa, both of Denver, Colorado, two stepsons William Haver of Richmond, VA, and Thomas Haver of Concord, Mass., a brother Laurie Campbell of Kansas, a sister, Virginia Sullivan of Illinois, and four grandchildren, August and Hayley Ruhnka of Colorado and Laura and Cate Campbell of Mass. A memorial service will be held on Sunday aft., December 19th at 3:00 PM at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, New York and Embury Avenues, Ocean Grove.

ALICE MAY WHITTINGTON McGLYNN, 83, of OCEAN GROVE, formerly of Stamford, Conn., and Short Hills, N. J., died on Sunday, December 26, 2004, at the Manor by the Sea, Ocean Grove. Born in Pueblo, Colo., she was an avid gardener, enjoyed being outdoors, loved the Jersey seashore and spent much of her time keeping her five children active in sports, scouting, social activities and various hobbies. Alice was the wife of the late Thomas P. McGlynn, loving mother of five children, Kathleen A. Dragon, Thomas P. McGlynn, Jr., Fred J. McGlynn, and John P. McGlynn, and predeceased by a daughter, Patricia A. McGlynn “Pam” Whittam, grandmother of seven and great-grandmother of five. Also surviving are her brothers Louis Whittington of Colo. and Fred Whittington of Calif.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 315 First Street, Westfield, N. J. on Thursday morn., December 30th at 10:30 with burial following at the Fairview Cemetery, Westfield. J., she had lived in Nutley before moving here 21 years ago. She was predeceased in 2001 by her husband, Walter L. Lizak, a Navy Seabee, and by her son Robert Lizak in 1988.
