Especially when considering prices, a personal contact with a licensed funeral director is always better than merely reading information on a web site or a piece of paper and we will always recommend that after you gather some basic information from this site (and, perhaps, others) you should discuss your thoughts and questions in person with a licensed funeral director. There is no obligation (nor cost) on your part if you contact us for a conference, either by telephone or in person (we prefer face to face conferences).
As is required by federal regulation, we will discuss prices over the telephone but verbal quotations for services and merchandise will always be suspect and can easily be misperceived. We would like to provide you with a written quotation whether after a personal conference or after a telephone conference. Please ask . . . and allow us to do that.
New Jersey regulations state that ONLY a
LICENSED FUNERAL DIRECTOR
may quote funeral prices and make funeral arrangements.
Regarding actual dollar amounts noted on this site:
No page on this site that notes a specific dollar amount should be taken as a funeral price quotation document...the only valid quotation of charges by the Ocean Grove Memorial Home is made on our Statement of Funeral Goods and Services Selected and is signed and dated by an approved licensed funeral director. The only intent of noting specific dollar amounts here is for you to be able to make an objective comparison of cost/price between different types of service options. The amounts noted on this site pertain ONLY to the Ocean Grove Memorial Home and only through the date noted at the bottom of the web page that the price quotation actually appears on.
All pages on this site that quote specific dollar amounts are dated. Please note that no price should be considered accurate AFTER the date noted at the bottom of its website page (the page that the amount is quoted on). You are invited to phone the funeral home to speak to a licensed funeral director and ask him the current applicable price(s).

"Funeral" Costs
A funeral, in its broadest sense, includes all of the services of the funeral director and the funeral home staff along with the use of its owned facilities and motor vehicles and the funeral merchandise that you select.
A "funeral ceremony" is that formal gathering usually at the funeral home, or perhaps at a church, which immediately preceeds the burial or cremation, wherein a person, usually a member of the clergy, speaks. (A "memorial ceremony" is the same as a funeral ceremony except without the body of the decedent being present.)
In addition to the services and products provided directly by the funeral home, additional services and products that are provided by others are part of most funeral "packages," for example, clergy services, newspaper notices, copies of the death certificate and sometimes cemetery or crematory charges, etc.
The total cost of each "funeral" will vary according to individual preferences, needs and selections.
Major Variables that Affect Funeral Prices
The method of final disposition that is chosen is the variable that most directly and severly affects the cost of funeral packages. In general, funerals ending in cremation are less expensive than funerals ending with earth burial (which are generally of less cost than mausoleum entombment funerals).
The second most direct variable is whether or not the body of the decedent is to be present for calling hours and/or a funeral ceremony. Both Immediate Burial and Direct Cremation are substantially less expensive than funerals that include visiting at the funeral home and a funeral ceremony. Whether or not the casket is open or closed during the visiting time and the ceremony is of relatively little financial consequence.
The third most direct variable is the cost of funeral merchandise such as the casket, a burial vault, a cremation urn, clothing, printed cards, flowers and memorialization items such as a family monument or individual grave marker at the cemetery.
Another significant variable is transportation costs for both the casket and family members who choose to accompany the decedent's body to a distant cemetery.Significant additional costs are connected to those services and products provided by others.
Grave opening charges vary widely, even within a rather limited geographic area and cemetery requirements may state that you must provide funeral merchandise, such as a concrete burial vault, that you might not otherwise choose to purchase.
Cemetery grave space for a casket and burial vault, although less expensive than a mausoleum crypt is more expensive than space for cremated remains. Some cemeteries sell one grave for two or more burials and other cemeteries refuse to allow more than one burial in each grave. Family plots must be purchased at one time, although payment plans are usually available for graves not used immediately.
Newspaper notices are becoming very expensive, often costing $5.50 (and often more) per line of printed text. Each newspaper sets it's own rates and rules for content...some newspaper notices are free obituaries and others incur a charge, e.g., classified death notices and paid funeral notices (which are often confused with free obituaries).
We will freely explain the entire range of costs for all the services and merchandise that you select or are required to purchase and we will encourage you to select only those services and merchandise which you desire. Speak frankly with your funeral director about costs and any limitations that you are faced with.
The staff of the Ocean Grove Memorial Home will make every effort to accommodate you and to be responsive to your particular financial circumstances and needs.
